Zurab Guruli – Georgian Doctor Working in US who has Literary Talent

Georgian doctor Zurab Guruli is the director of anesthesia and surgery departments at the US Montgomery Federal Clinic as well as the professor of clinical anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi. However, he has passed quite difficult and interesting path before he achieved his goal.

Doctrina has interviewed Zurab Guruli, who discussed his activities in details. According to him, the process of obtaining the US medical certificate has taken several years. In 1992 he graduated from Tbilisi State University and continued post-graduated studentship at Tbilisi Institute of Doctors’ Training. In 1995, after he successfully maintained a thesis he went on a mission at Louisiana State University in the city of New Orleans and made his mind to continue his career in the US. In 2004, after Zurab Guruli underwent several steps of residency, he began work as an anesthesiologist-reanimatolog. Simultaneously, he was the assistant-professor at Tulane University. It is notable, that Zurab Guruli has been working at Montgomery clinic since 2006.

According to the Georgian successful doctor, he remembers his personal despair and nihilism, fear towards an uncertain future, it has triggered Zurab Guruli’s decision to promote Georgian young people’s professional career.

In this regard, several steps have been taken and despite of the disastrous lack of time, last year upon the initiative of yet another Georgian doctor working in the US Gia Khurtsidze, who is one of the directors at “Evex” corporation in Georgia, Zurab Guruli agreed to lead the anesthesia-reanimation residency program in Georgia, because in this way he tries to contribute to improve professional skills of several young colleagues.

“A doctor is not a just doctor but a diplomat, a mentor, a confessor and a universal audience with the patience of Job. A doctor meets a modern human when they are coming in this world and a doctor helps them to move to another dimension with dignity.

A doctor is an attorney of people’s most personal, most piquant problems. Humans’ universal    lawyer and protector at the most helpless and vulnerable moments of their lives.  It’s the greatest duty and a special privilege. Accordingly, a sophisticated professional has to possess all these arts, “- Zurab Guruli said in his interview with “Doctrina”.

The famous Georgian doctor is fond of writing. He writes essays, stories, publicity letters, and novels. Last time he is fond of translating. He has translated several poems by Hafiz and Jalāl ad-Dīn Rūmī, but his favorite writer is well-known Edgar Allan Poe.

“Due to my profession, I have to wander at the exits between various dimensions. Their mysticism helps me in perceiving my patients’ feelings better; At the same time, I also need to relieve to deal with a lot of negative emotion and to avoid feeling depressed,” – Zurab Guruli said. Although his writings have become very popular in social networks, due to the lack of time nothing has been published yet. However, his publicist letters and reviews are regularly published in various newspapers.

“Doctrina” wishes the Georgian doctor success in his life and offers its readers the poem “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe translated by Zurab Guruli.

ზუსტად არ ვიცი, თუ რატომ მოვისურვე ამ პოემის თარგმნა. უცნაური მიზიდულობა აქვს ედგარ პოს დაბურულ და აფორიაქებულ მისტიკას…

Georgian Students’ Invention Offers Optimal Waste Disposal Plan

“PAPU“  is yet another interesting project that was introduced within the frames of the Makeathon Your Startup Idea in Reality held  by Ilia State University (ISU) and Industrial Innovations Laboratory (FabLab Iliauni).

PAPU is a small-sized touch screen device that can help municipalities to reduce their spending and save money.

“Doctrina” has interviewed one of the authors of the idea – Medea Tlashidze, who told us about the new invention details.

The co-authors of the project are  – Elene Beridze and Irakli Londaridze. Medea Tlashidze and Elene Beridze are fourth-year students of business department at Ilia State University, while Irakli Londaridze is an information technology (IT) specialist.

Medea told us that the idea came to them due to the actual problem facing cities. “The problem we are facing every day is traffic jam caused by garbage cars. We have found that 70 % of the trash cars return back empty from their routes. Accordingly extra resources are spent. We wanted to solve this problem and to create the optimal waste disposal plan with lower costs. We want to live in a modern city, and we believe that solving such problems will be very important, “- she said.

PAPU is the device that can be attached to any kind of waste bins. It sends information through GSM module about the waste level in litter bins then, through the program, the optimal routes are drawn for garbage trucks.

The device determines three levels in the bins – full, medium and empty. Therefore, if this invention is implemented, trash cars will cause less traffic jam then, when the trash bins are empty.

Currently, the young inventors are working on a prototyping with the help of Zoomout”- Preaccelerator of Ilia State University and Industrial Innovations Laboratory (FabLab Iliauni).

On February 21 they participated in Startup Battle competition and introduced their invention to the Ukrainian investors. PAPU was presented at Wolves Summit, an international networking conference that took place in Warsaw, Poland on 28-29 March 2017. The summit participants from around the world included 350 startups.

Young Georgian Innovator’s Wheelchair Makes Life Easier for PWDs

Karlo Khutsishvili has been named as the best innovator of the current year. He has just introduced the invention – a wheelchair “Nonstop” that can improve the lives of persons with disabilities. The young inventor has developed the wheelchair together with his friend Nino Abelashvili.
“There is an engine, special scheme, a battery and a variety of sensor built in the main frame that is attached to the wheelchair making the device faster and environmentally friendly. Generally, electric wheelchairs weigh 38 kg. [83.77 lbs] our wheelchair is just 10 kg., main frame – 12 kg. As far as you know it’s difficult to transport a wheelchair, while our wheelchair solves this problem completely. Both the main frame and the wheelchair can be folded making it easier to move. The wheelchair’s speed limit is 50 -70 km / h speed and it has a battery life of 4 hours max, “- Karlo Khutsishvili said.
During the course of their work on the wheelchair, a lot of ideas came to the young inventors, for example, they have developed a glove for people with hand problems and are not able to control the wheelchair. The glove enables the users to open and close their hands and the most important thing that they will be able to control the wheelchairs independently. The wheelchair moves in the direction of the hand movement. It is also customized for visually impaired persons and people with hearing loss. The wheelchair has special built-in sensors which allow the users to detect various obstacles.
“Very often a person’s wheelchair turns over or collides with something that can cause injuries, not to mention the psychological tension and the greatest stress. We have managed to solve this problem, too. We have designed an innovative helmet, it has a built- in sensor that perceives collision, deviation and oversetting of the wheelchair. This information is supplied to the main scheme, the scheme opens the container, in which there is the pumped air, the air stream ejects out and the helmet opens. This method protects the wheelchair user from damage. It is a dream of every PWD kids to move independently, go out, take a walk and interact with their friends. Now, it can be achieved through the nonstop wheelchair. A parent can track the child from home and even control the wheelchair’s movement”, – Karlo Khutsishvili, person behind the project, said.
It is notable that Karlo Khutsishvili, together with his friend Irakli Kapanadze, has won Millennium Innovations Award – MIA. They have participated in Conrad Foundation’s Innovation Summit at NASA center. The young inventors introduced the project – “Multiclimatizator”. It is the device that forecasts expected local weather, measures temperature and humidity of the soil. It assists farmers to learn about the expected hail or rain in advance.
Another invention, which has brought a great success to the young inventor, is the Life Saver. It is notable that Karlo Khutsishvili has developed the device together with his sister Ana Khutsishvili. Life Saver is an unmanned mine cleaning system, which is controlled by iPad. The device can remotely fly over long distances and safely clear the mines. Life Saver can save the lives of hundreds of people worldwide.
“It is disappointing that the state does not pay much attention to those who have the tech talent and can present own country’s name to the other world with dignity. I, for example, have some inventions, however, I cannot patent them as it requires a large amount of money. I try to implement my ideas at the own expense. I would advise young people to strive toward their goal, as there is nothing impossible. The most important thing is personal growth and self-development, I could make my dream come true and I traveled to NASA, “- said Karlo Khutsishvili.

19-year-old Student Preparing Georgian Pupils for International Young Physicists’ Tournament

V. Komarovi Tbilisi physics and mathematics N 199 public school has actively been preparing for the International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT) for several months.

It should be noted that 19-year-old student Giorgi Tsereteli trains the Georgian school students for the responsible tournament.

The young physicist spoke about his activities in his interview with “Doctrina”.

Currently, Giorgi is a second-year student of the department of physics at Free University of Tbilisi. He showed a great interest in physics at an early age and has won a lot of prizes. For example : when he was a twelfth grade pupil, he became a member of the Georgian Olympic Team in Physics. Due to this fact Giorgi was enrolled in the University without requiring to take exams.  Since that time the young physicist has actively been participating in various conferences. Giorgi Tsereteli participated in Kakha Bendukidze Annual Conference on Physics this year and together with several other students he will participate in the International Conference of Physics Students that takes place in Turin, Italy on August 7-14.

Due to their experience in this field Giorgi and his friends have won a national tournament, too. Komarovi physics and mathematics N 199 public school asked Giorgi to lead the laboratory team. “It is incredibly pleased when I see how much progress our children make. The school has a relatively new and high-tech lab and together with the school students we are establishing much more interesting and diverse approach towards physics problems,” – Giorgi said.

This year tournament takes place in Singapore in mid-June and five participants, one trainer and one member of the international committee are taking part in it. However, the team has not been composed yet.

Giorgi Tsereteli and the pupils have solved a lot of physics problems. For example: if you pour honey or any other sticky liquid (for example, shampoo) from height, it makes coils (see : picture I). The pupils were tasked to learn the reason of this process. In addition, the pupils are currently working on the device giving the visualization of air density (see: picture II). It should be emphasized that the greatest problem the young students facing in this field, including technical or financing problems, goes beyond their capabilities.

“Very often there is the problem related to funding of the team participating in the national or international tournaments. Sometimes, schools provide us with funding, sometime we are funded by the City Hall or universities, however, I cannot say that the situation is stable. In addition, there is not a great number of schools willing to participate in the scientific tournament, despite the fact that any 15-year-old child is able to participate in it,” – Giorgi Tsereteli said.

“Mecnieri.me” – Georgian Student’s Project Aims at Improving Children’ Cognition

“Mecnieri.me” ( scientist me ) is another new project that aims to create scientific experiments for kids and teenagers. These low-budget experiments are easy to conduct at home. The experiments help teens deepen their knowledge in the fields such as astronomy, geology, meteorology, computer science, physics, mathematics and engineering.

“Doctrina” has interviewed project author – Tako Basiashvili.

Tako Basiashvili, who is just 19 years old, is a second-year student of the department of  biochemistry at the San Diego State University. She has already participated in the implementation of the very responsible and interesting project.

The project – “Mecnieri.me”  is a cognitive online portal for children aged under 12 years of age. There are interesting and simple experiments placed into the portal. The main charm of these experiments is that each of them can be done by the supplies that are easily available at home.

In order to better understand the project, let’s take one of these simple experiments : “invisible ink”. This experiment requires only a sheet and lemon juice. If a child writes any word on a piece of paper with a lemon juice and then dries it nothing will appear on the paper, but in case of reheat it the written word will clearly be seen. The process is not only fun, but also cognitive, because children are able to find the process explanation on the site and to understand more about it. The website provides them with relevant information about the process.

Thus, they learn that the lemon juice, as well as other fruit juice, contains carbon compounds. These substances are invisible at room temperature, but in the heat they may dissolve and release the carbon. In case carbon meets air, oxidation process begins and the substance turns into open or dark brown colored substance, which is the experiment’s result.

The following simple experiment is ,,giant soap bubbles “.  Probably every child dreamed of having large soap balloons, which actually is not as difficult as it seems. In order to achieve our goal, we need to mix one cup of water with two tablespoons of dish washing liquid, a tablespoon of glycerin (available in pharmacies) and a teaspoon of sugar, the mixture should be kept in a closed container for 1-hour period, and then, we have to mix gently and start forming giant bubbles with flexible metallic sticks.

“Studying science and technology at an early age will support violation of stereotypes about these fields in our country and it will be the guarantee of future growth and success of the fields of science and technology, “- Tako Basiashvili said in her interview with “Doctrina”.

“Doctrina” has interviewed the team members as well as their mentor Uta Kilasonia.

“Our project – ,,geologic hazards”, aims to predict  danger of a landslide. This device is a notification system. We have used the Hall sensor, which shows the changes in magnetic field strength. Our project has many advantages: it’s cheaper, it’s suitable for all kinds of terrain, it’s accurate and reliable one. The most important thing is that it can be produced and introduced in Georgia. Magnets are placed on the ground, in a small ditch, Hall sensors are placed above the magnets, few millimeters away from them. The magnets are connected to a micro -processor and information is transferred to the central server by using the GSM System. An app that enables us to regulate the ground vibration limits, is loaded in tablets. When the ground vibration exceeds the limit, the device automatically sends messages to the mobile phones of registered population. It should be noted that the sensor device has no analogues in the world. This idea came to us due to the 2016 disaster in Senaki, the August flood and mudflow affected the district, in particular, the access road and the bridge of our school-gymnasium was collapsed”- the students said.

“We have studied the current equipment that cost millions of Gels. We think, that our device is cost-effective for the state. It costs just about GEL 10 000, and is more accurate than the existing ones, “- Uta Kilasonia, the team mentor, said.

The device is scheduled to be installed on the territory of Nokalakevi Protected Area and Archeological Museum.

It should be noted that the sensor device, created by the young Georgian school students from Senaki district, has a great response and positive assessments from the scientific community.

The young inventors will travel to NASA to undergo the educational program of the University of Space Center.

Smart Wooden Ring by Georgian Students Makes Life Easier and Safer

Georgian students have developed a smart wooden ring that can make people’s life easier and safer.

“The idea came to us at our University. Campus has a system of permits. We wanted something that would replace the identity card for allowing us to enter the building. Thus, we created the first ring and its first function was about entering the hall,” – Nino Gvazava, one of the authors of the invention, has said.

The students melted different cards, placed the RFID tags into the 3D printed ring and then, using it made payments at various stores.

,,Cnick“ is a smart ring that is made of ecologically pure wood and enables customers to choose own rings’ design, the inscription on it and the relevant colors. In addition, it is the only ring that substitutes a user’s wallet and cares for the life of the owner at the same time.

#CNICK is the first smart ring that unifies a pass, a debit card and a seasonal ticket and enables users to enter various organizations and offices, including sports halls, cinemas, entertainment centers, with only one gesture, at the same time, the ring saves the medical information about the person – blood type, past illnesses, allergic responsiveness etc. This is very important and it means the Cnick can save a person’s life.

The startup ,,Cnick” participated in the international investment conference Seed Forum 2016 which was held on December 14 at the center for innovation and entrepreneurship (iHUB) with the support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Within the frameworks of the project the founders will be able to undergo trainings in Oslo, Norway in May and to introduce their idea to investors in order to obtain additional funding for improvement of the project and to make new connections.

Currently,,,Cnick” has not a payment function as it is required to undergo various certification processes with Visa and Mastercard  for mass production of the ring and it’s a matter of time. The startup is actively involved in this process and the ring will soon offer the function of payment.

Gaming Vest with Sense of Reality – Georgian Young Inventors’ Successful Project

Laser Combat — is the waistcoat, developed by three Georgian young students, enabling gamers to perceive games as real.

“Doctrina” has interviewed Givi Beridze, one of the authors of the idea, who gave some details about the project.

Givi Beridze, Nikoloz Sikharulidze, Tornike Patskhashvili, students of faculty of computer science and mathematics, and Irakli Mskhiladze, a student of electrical engineering at the Agrarian University, are the authors of the project.

Childhood memories, when there was no feeling of reality during various games, have inspired the idea of creating the waistcoat. The Georgian students have decided to develop a vest, called Laser Combat, which gives gamers a sence of reality and at the same time, is safe and painless.

Laser Combat is fully equipped with sensors and when a laser beam falls on a sensor, the vibration engine is activated behind it and gamers have an impression that the bullet really hits them. It should be noted that this technology is extremely similar to the existing ordinary vests, but the feeling of realism distinguishes it from its rivals, such as – “Airsoft Paintball” and etc.

Apart from winning the “Innovation Camp”, Dubai investment companies “TURN8“ and  “I360 accelerator” imposed a monthly grant and in this way assisted the winning team in implementing the project.

Young inventors presented their idea to the “Start-up Georgia”, a government-initiated innovative business supporting program, and took the fifth place out of total 20 participant projects. Many investors liked the idea. The project has received Gel 100 000 in investment and the authors could market their product.

The young students hold negotiations in Georgia in order to open the first gaming club. They also plan to enter the European market.

Young Georgians’ Invention Helps Patients in Rehabilitation Process after Stroke

A Glove declared a winning project at the Makeathon competition – “Your Start-up Idea in Reality” – held in November, 2016.  The Glove helps the patients, who have had a stroke, in rehabilitation process.

The authors of the project are two young brothers – Giorgi and Dimitri Tskhovrebadzes. 19 year old Dimitri Tskhovrebadze is a student of the department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as for the younger brother, Giorgi, who is going to turn 18 soon, he is a student of school of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (MACs) at the Free University, Tbilisi, Georgia.

Mr. Giorgi Tskhovrebadze has told “Doctrina” that the new Glove idea was generated just when the Makeathon competition was taking place at the Ilia State University of Georgia (Iliauni).  Then the brothers elaborated the idea, which was approved by the jury.

The new device is designed for people who need stroke rehabilitation. According to statistics, 15 million people suffer stroke worldwide each year. Generally, people who have stroke lose their ability move. It takes several months to restore the moving ability, and the treatment process requires huge financial resources (more than USD 10,000).  The cost of the Glove, developed by the Georgian inventors, does not exceed USD 150.

How does the new Glove work? – A patient puts a glove on her/his damage hand and performs funny, simulation-based tasks. Sensors perceive the movement and tries to make the Glove to perform the same action, as a result, the Glove helps the damaged hand repeating the same movement.  Finally, the patient moves both hands in the same way, while brain starts restoring functionality and the movement ability is improved.

The winners attended the world congress of mobile technologies held in Spain in February of 2017.  They were fully funded.  ‘We have just been named among the ten best teams at the “Jacobs International Startup Competition” and in late March we’ll present our project in Germany, where a final stage of the competition is due to take place,” –  Giorgi Tskhovrebadze said in his interview with “Doctrina”.

So far, the prototype of the glove is being manufactured.  Afterwards, the device will be used in the treatment process and will undergo a special observation at the various hospitals.
